Roles in Brightspace control access to and permissions for content and tools within a course or organization. Each user is assigned a role for each course or organization they participate in.
Users are not able to add others to the roster within a course. To request a faculty or staff member to be added to your course, please open a ticket in the IT Portal.
User Roles
Instructor(s) (as indicated in Banner)
Instructors have full access to their course(s). They can access their course regardless of availability and can add, edit, and delete content and course activities (assignments, discussions, quizzes, etc.) within the course. They can create announcements and email the classlist. They have full control over the Gradebook, with the ability to view, enter, and edit grades. Instructors can import or copy content into their course and can export or copy content out of their course to another course where they have the instructor role. In Banner, multiple instructors can be assigned.
Peer Observer - (Instructor No Edit)
The "Instructor - No Edit" role has limited access to the course. They can access the course regardless of availability. They cannot add, edit, or delete content or course activities within the course. They are not able to create or reply to posts within a discussion. They are able to create announcements and can email the classlist. They do not have access to the Gradebook, and cannot view, enter, or edit grades. The "Instructor - No Edit" role can import or copy content into the course, but cannot export or copy content out of the course.
Teaching Assistant (TA)
Teaching Assistants have full access to the course(s) in which they have this role. They can access the course regardless of availability, and can add, edit, and delete content and course activities (assignments, discussions, quizzes, etc.) within the course. They are able to create announcements and email the classlist. They have full control over the Gradebook, with the ability to view, enter, and edit grades. Teaching Assistants are not able to import or copy content into the course, and cannot export or copy content out of the course.
Student Assistant
The "TA Basic" role has limited access to the course. They can only access the course if it is active. They cannot add, edit, or delete content or course activities within the course, but can see course content and activities regardless of content/activity availability. They are able to create and reply to posts within a discussion. They are not able to create announcements, but can email the classlist. They do not have access to the Gradebook, and cannot view, enter, or edit grades. The "TA Basic" role cannot import or copy content into the course, and cannot export or copy content out of the course.
Teaching/Grading Assistant (TA Grade Access)
The "TA Grade Access" role has limited access to the course. They can only access the course if it is active. They cannot add, edit, or delete content or course activities within the course, but can see course content and activities regardless of content/activity availability. They are able to create and reply to posts within a discussion. They are not able to create announcements, but can email the classlist. They have full control over the Gradebook, with the ability to view, enter, and edit grades. The "TA Grade Access" role cannot import or copy content into the course, and cannot export or copy content out of the course.
Library
The "Library" role has limited access to the course. They can access the course regardless of availability, and can add, edit, and delete content and course activities within the course. They are able to create and reply to posts within a discussion. They are able to create announcements and email the class list. They do not have access to the Gradebook, and cannot view, enter, or edit grades. The "Library" role is able to import or copy content into the course and can export or copy content out of the course.
Student (as indicated in Banner)
The "Student" role has limited access to the course. Students are not able to see courses in Brightspace until they are made active by the instructor. Students can submit assignments, take quizzes, and participate in discussions. Students cannot create or grade course content or activities. Students are able to see and email the classlist.
Student Incomplete
The "Student Incomplete" role has limited access to the course. Students are able to see courses in Brightspace in which they were previously enrolled, even if the course has closed to other users. Students can submit assignments, take quizzes, access content, and participate in discussions, though faculty-established end dates for course content will still be in place. Students cannot create or grade course content or activities. Students are able to see and email the classlist. NOTE: Courses available to users with the Student Incomplete role will see a "Closed" label on the course, though they will still be able to access it (the course image will be in color, as opposed to the greyed-out inaccessible version).
Auditor (as indicated in Banner)
The "Auditor" role has limited access to the course. The Auditor role is given to students who register as an auditor for the course in Banner. Any auditor will automatically be added to the course in Brightspace. Auditors are not able to see courses in Brightspace until they are made active by the instructor. Auditors can submit assignments, take quizzes, and participate in discussions. Auditors cannot create or grade course content or activities, and cannot be graded in the Gradebook. Auditors are able to see and email the classlist.
Org Leader
Leaders have full access to the organization. They can access the organization regardless of availability, and can add, edit, and delete content within the organization. They have full control over the Gradebook, and can add other users to the organization. Leaders are able to export or copy content to another organization where they have the Leader role.
