This step-by-step guide walks you through copying the content of your network drive (or "Z drive") over to OneDrive. Files and folders saved to OneDrive are automatically backed up to the cloud and can be accessed from any device (on or off campus).
Sign-in to a campus PC
The first step is to sign-in to any campus PC (e.g. a computer in the library) and then confirm that you are signed into the OneDrive app.
- Look for the OneDrive icon (the blue cloud) at the bottom of your screen near the date/time. If you don't see the OneDrive icon, click the up arrow near the date/time to display more icons.
- If the OneDrive icon has a line through it, this means you are not currently signed in. You will need to sign-in to OneDrive and complete the multi-factor verification.
- Click on the OneDrive icon and then click Sign in.
- When the Microsoft Microsoft Sign in screen appears, enter your Buffalo State username followed by @buffalostate.edu and click Next.
- You'll be redirected to the Buffalo State sign-in page. Enter your Buffalo State username and your network password, and then click Sign in.
- Complete the two-step verification when prompted.
Copy content from Z drive to OneDrive
After signing into OneDrive, you are ready to begin copying your files to OneDrive using the Copy and Paste commands. Once your files and folder have been successfully copied, they can be deleted from the Z drive.
- Open File Explorer from the taskbar.
- Click This PC and open your Z drive. It will appear as 'username (\\bscstudent) (Z:)' under Network locations.
- Select the files or folders that you want to move. To select all files and folders within a folder, click Select all on the Home tab (or press Ctrl+A).
Tip! To select a number of sequential files or folders, click the first item, press and hold down the Shift key, and then click the last item. To select a number of non-sequential files or folders, click the first item, press and hold down the Control key while you click on the items that you want to select.
- With the items selected, click Copy on the Home tab.
- Use the left navigation pane to locate the desired folder in OneDrive - buffalostate.edu.
- Click Paste on the Home tab.
Please Note: To avoid confusion and duplicate files, once your files/folder have been successfully copied to OneDrive, it is recommended that you delete them from their original location.
Saving new files to OneDrive
New files that you create should default to saving to your OneDrive. You can also use the Save As command to save a file to OneDrive:
- With the file open, select Save As from the File menu.
- Select OneDrive - buffalostate and locate the desired folder.
- Enter a name for the file in the File name box, and click Save.
