At-home access to Microsoft Office for students

Now Available! Office 365 ProPlus - a full version of Office which includes the applications that you're familiar with like Access, Excel, PowerPoint and Word - is now available to Buffalo State students to download and install on up to 5 personal devices for PC and Mac.

If you have a Chromebook, may be able to use this alternate set of directions to access the Google Play Store versions of the apps, though these won't be compatible with all Chromebook devices.

Step 1: Sign-in to the Office portal

The first step is to sign-in to the Office portal from the Windows or Mac device that you want to install Office on.

  1. Go to www.office.com and click Sign in.

Click Sign-in

  1. When the Microsoft Sign in screen appears, enter your Buffalo State username followed by @buffalostate.edu and click Next.

Don't include "mail" when you sign-in

  1. You will be redirected to the Buffalo State sign-in page. Enter your network password and click Sign In. If you are prompted to Stay signed in? click No.

Enter password

  1. If you see this More information required screen, you will need to setup multi-factor authentication for your account before proceeding. For additional information, see steps 5 & 6 of the "Setup multi-factor authentication for Microsoft 365 services" article).

Click Next at the More Information screen

Please note: If you have trouble signing in, try opening Google Chrome in Incognito mode first.

Step 2: Download and Install Office to your device

After signing into the Office portal, follow these steps to download and install Office on your device.

  1. Once signed in to the Office portal, just click the Install Office button in the upper-right corner of the page.

Click Install Office and select Office 365 apps

  1. Click Save or Save File to save the Setup file to your computer.

Click Save or Save File

  1. Locate and open the Setup file to begin the installation.

Open Setup file to begin installation

Once the install process completes, all you need to do is sign into any of the Office apps with your Network credentials again (adding "@buffalostate.edu" to your username, like in Step 1). Opening any of the programs should prompt you for this login, and Office will remain "activated" as long as you remain signed in.
