Using Smart Views to Organize the Grade Center

The use of Smart Views allow you to organize your Blackboard Grade Center in many ways.

Smart Views for Categories

You can use Categories to create custom Smart Views of your Grade Center.

View Existing Smart Views

Your course comes with Smart Views for each default category. These include, Assignments, Blogs, Discussion Boards, Journals, Self and Peer Assessments, and Tests. To access your Smart Views:

  1. Access your Blackboard course.
  2. In the Control Panel, click on Grade Center and select Full Grade Center.

  3. Click on Manage and select Smart Views.

  4. Here you'll find all existing Smart Views. To add an existing Smart View as a favorite (so it appears in the Control Panel under Full Grade Center) click the star icon.

  5. When finished, click OK.

  6. You'll now see any new favorite Smart Views appear under Full Grade Center.

Create New Smart Views for Categories

If you've created new categories for Grade Center items in your course, you can create a Smart View for that new category. For example, if you added a new "Projects" category, you can have a smart view that shows only the grade center columns categorized as "Projects".

  1. Create your category and categorize the appropriate columns.
  2. From the Full Grade Center, click Manage and select Smart Views.

  3. Click Create Smart View.

  4. Give your Smart View a Name.
  5. If desired, check the box to Add as Favorite.
  6. Under Selection Criteria next to Type of View, choose Category and Status.

  7. Under the Category dropdown menu, select your Category.

  8. Under Users, choose between All Users, Selected Users, or Selected Groups.
    • Tip: If you want to see all of your students for the specific category, choose All Users.

  9. Under Filter Results, choose the columns to display in your Smart View.
    1. Tip: If you're unsure, leave this as All Statuses.

  10. Click Submit.
  11. If you want to add this Smart View as a favorite (so it appears in the Control Panel under Full Grade Center) click the star icon next to the Smart View you created.
  12. Click OK.

 

Creating Smart Views for Multiple Course Sections

After merging multiple sections of a course, you can create a Smart View in the Grade Center for each course section containing only the students within that section.

  1. Access your Blackboard course.
  2. In the Control Panel, click on Grade Center and select Full Grade Center.

  3. Click on Manage and select Smart Views.

  4. Name the Smart View for the section of your course.
  5. Check the Add as a Favorite box to add the Smart View under Grade Center in the Control Panel for quick access.
  6. Next to Type of View, select User.
  7. Select Users by holding down the Ctrl key and clicking each student within the section.
  8. Click Submit to create the Smart View.
  9. Repeat this process for all course sections.
  10. Access these Smart Views of each section by clicking on the section name under Full Grade Center.
