Students - Getting Started with the Bengal Success Portal

The Bengal Success Portal is a tool that provides you with a central location to connect you with the people and services that can help you succeed at Buffalo State. It includes access to a customizable profile and personalized channels that make it easy to schedule the time you need with your instructors, advisers, and counselors. The Bengal Success Portal can also help you manage the steps you need to stay on track and meet your goals.

Set Up Your Profile

Customize your profile to let others know more about you, and to choose how you will receive messages from the Bengal Success Portal.

  1. Login to the Bengal Success Portal with your Buffalo State username and password.
  2. Click on the menu in the top left corner of the screen.

  3. Click on your name and select Profile.

  4. Customize your profile by uploading a photo, setting appointment reminders, and adding a secondary email address for receiving emails.

Receive Text Message Notifications

You are able to receive notifications sent to your mobile phone.

  1. Enter the email address of your mobile phone in the Alternate Email field. This address will be a combination of your phone number plus carrier information. This format is specified below, and can also be seen by clicking on the mobile icon next to the Alternate Email field.
    1. For example, if your provider is AT&T, you would enter your number with the area code followed by @txt.att.net (8885551212@txt.att.net)
      • AT&T: cellnumber@txt.att.net
      • Verizon: cellnumber@vtext.com
      • T-Mobile: cellnumber@tmomail.net
      • Sprint PCS: cellnumber@messaging.sprintpcs.com
      • Virgin Mobile: cellnumber@vmobl.com
      • US Cellular: cellnumber@email.uscc.net
      • Nextel: cellnumber@messaging.nextel.com
      • Boost: cellnumber@myboostmobile.com
      • Alltel: cellnumber@message.alltel.com
    2. When finished, click Submit.

Your Dashboard

Your Dashboard can be accessed by clicking the menu and selecting Dashboard.

The left column of your Dashboard displays upcoming appointments and date-based tasks. The right hand column of your Dashboard highlights activity and items that require your attention and may include alerts related to your class work, recommended referrals to campus support offices to help you succeed, and kudos from your instructors.

My Success Network

Click the menu and select My Success Network to display your personalized network. This channel lists the people and resources that are available to assist you.

For each person or service listed you will find contact information, supporting websites, and, if online scheduling is enabled for that person/service, a link to make an appointment. If a service includes a waiting room for walk-in appointments, you can click the “Waiting Room” link to find out how many students are currently in line.

Schedule an Appointment

You are able to schedule appointments with instructors and advisers who allow up online scheduling.

  1. Click the drop down arrow next to the desired person in the My Success Network or Courses channel and select Schedule

  2. Make your selection under What do you need help with and click Continue.
  3. Select the date and time that works for you and click Continue.

  4. Review your appointment details and click Confirm when finished. You will get an email with the appointment details and the appointment will be listed on your Dashboard.

Change an Appointment

 Upcoming appointments will be listed on your Dashboard in the timeline view (left column). Click the edit icon to modify the appointment or the cancel icon to cancel it.

Not Sure What You Need? Raise Your Hand

  1. From the menu, click on the Raise Your Hand icon.

  2. You will be asked to provide additional information such as the type of help you are requesting, the related course (if applicable), and a description. Click Submit to request help.

Courses

From your menu, click on Courses to display information about courses you are enrolled in as well as contacts and available support related to each. Here you can see your Brightspace course grades and your attendance record. You're also able to make an appointment with your instructor, tutors, or request help related to a course.

Request Help with a Course

  1. From your Home page, click on the Courses icon
  2. To the right of the course you would like help with, click on the “Help me with this course” icon

Service Catalog

Certain instructors and advisers may be listed in your personal My Success Network, but other individuals and services can be found in the broader Services catalog.

  1. To access all services, click on the menu.
  2. Click on My Success Network.
  3. Click Show Other Services.

  4. On this page you can search for a service or scroll through the list of available services. For each service you can, view contact information, visit service websites, and schedule online appoints (if available).
