Difference Between Email and My Messages in Blackboard

Both the Email and My Messages tools in Blackboard can be used to communicate with students. Instructors can choose which method of communication they prefer to use in their Blackboard course. The following information describes the differences between the Email tool and the My Messages tool.

Email

The Email tool sends emails to Blackboard users' Buffalo State email accounts. Any emails sent through Blackboard are not stored in the Blackboard course. Recipients of emails sent through Blackboard can read and reply to these emails using their Buffalo State email account. Emails through Blackboard can only be sent to people enrolled in the course. The email tool in Blackboard can be used to send emails to different groups within a Blackboard course, such as student groups or groups with certain roles (such as graders, course builders, instructors, and teaching assistants).

By default, students cannot access the Email tool in Blackboard. If instructors would like students to have access to the Email tool, they can add the Email tool link to their course menu.

My Messages

My Messages are private communication that occur within a course and among course members. Users must be logged into the course to read and send Messages. When you send Messages, they are saved within the course on Blackboard. Because this communication occurs in Blackboard, users must log into Blackboard in order to check Messages.
