Set up your Student Gmail password

Important Notice Regarding Campus Email

Buffalo State is transitioning student email services from Gmail to Outlook email as part of a Microsoft 365 upgrade. This legacy article is intended for students accepted BEFORE Fall 2023 who still have Google accounts. Students accepted for the Fall 2023 semester (or later) will not receive Google accounts, and will access email through Outlook via Microsoft 365 using their Network credentials.

Students who currently have Google accounts will be moved to Outlook email during the summer of 2023. These students will maintain access to their Google account for one full year after the switch (until the summer of 2024). New email, however, will only be accessible from Outlook. The campus will also begin enforcing storage limits on all campus Google accounts starting in January 2023 (due to Google's new licensing model).

Setting up your Student Gmail account is easy!  Using info provided in Banner, you can simply sign-in at www.gmail.com with your school email address and default password. Here's how:

Step 1: Login to Banner

The first step is to sign into your Banner account:

  1. Visit the student Banner page
  2. Choose the Log in to Banner link
  3. Enter your User ID and PIN, then click Login

Step 2: Sign-in to Gmail with your default password

The next step is to look up your default password in Banner and then sign into Gmail:

  1. Navigate to Banner's Personal Information section
  2. Choose the Setup or Reset Student Gmail Password link
  3. Write down or copy the eight character password displayed next to "Your Default Password is". This password is case sensitive.

Important! DON'T CLICK THE RESET BUTTON AT THE BOTTOM unless you have logged into Student Gmail previously and have forgotten your password.
 
  1. Go to www.gmail.com and sign-in with your school email address and your default password

Step 3: Set up 2-Step Verification

The final step is to set up 2-Step Verification for your account:
