Categories in the Blackboard Learn Grade Center

Categories in the Blackboard Learn Grade Center can be useful to weight grades or when creating Smart Views to filter grade center columns. For example, you might have a "Projects" category that is used to categories several components of a class project. Or you might have a "Labs" category that categorizes each Lab grade that a student earns.

Create a Category

  1. Access your course in Blackboard.
  2. In the Control Panel, click on Grade Center.
  3. Click Full Grade Center.
  4. Click Manage and select Categories.

  5. You'll see a list of all existing categories, as well as any columns that have been assigned to each category.
  6. To create a new category, click Create Category.

  7. Give your new category a Name. You can also choose to add a description.
  8. Click Submit.
  9. You will see your new category appear in the list of all categories. 

Assign a Category to Grade Center Column(s)

After a category has been created, you can assign that category to specific columns in your Grade Center.

  1. Access your Blackboard course's Full Grade Center.
  2. Click Manage and select Column Organization.

  3. Check the box next to the columns you want to categorize.

  4. Click Change Category To and select the category you'd like to change your selected columns to.

  5. The columns you selected will show the new category that you have assigned.

  6. Repeat this process as necessary to re-categorize columns.
  7. When finished, click Submit.
